Opossum - Smithsonian Channel
I like going through my old photos to see what I was photographing this time of year. I came across this photo of an Opossum in a tree that I photographed on this day back in 2008. This photo isn't all that great but it means a lot to me because it was the first photo I had published.
A dog had chased this Opossum into a tree while I was driving around on Fort Chaffee here in Arkansas. The dog left as I pulled up in my pickup and I decided to get a few quick photos of the opossum. After a few photos, I drove a short distance away and watched the Opossum climb down from the tree and go on its way.
I didn't care much for this photo because an Opossum in a tree is not its typical behavior. I came close to deleting this photo but for some reason, I didn't.
I posted this photo to Flickr, and I was later contacted by the Smithsonian Channel. They wanted to use my photo on the show "Stories from the Vaults". They were doing a show in reference to the Panama Canal.
My photo was used in Episode 3: "Nature's Vault" - The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama tracks sloths. Then search the Panama Canal for clues to the creation of the Panamanian Isthmus, and rise sixteen stories atop the rainforest in a construction crane to do bug research.
Hosted by actor Tom Cavanagh, Stories from the Vaults was a series of 30-minute shows featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum complex. The new series, produced by Caragol Wells Productions, showcases the Smithsonian's rarest treasures as Tom Cavanagh meets with the experts behind the Smithsonian and discusses what it takes to preserve these precious artifacts for the generations to come. Stories from the Vaults debuted September 2007 on Smithsonian Networks. The second season premiered Sunday, July 12, 2009. (Source: Wikipedia)
